“My Journey”: Solo Exhibition

September 9 - 11, 2022

Artist Statement

We have all been through several tough years with the pandemic looming large over us. I have not exhibited sculpture since my “Resilience” show in 2019. Since then, I’ve become a hermit and poured my emotions and energies into painting instead. It was such a joy to return to canvas and relish the immediate satisfaction of seeing the colours flow and knowing they were not carved in stone.

To create, I have to feel deeply conflicting emotions, the unconscious interplay of disappointment, anger, joy and hope. The immediacy of translating my feelings was spectacularly rewarding. I revelled in the flexibility and freedom of the process. Painting transports me into an alternate world. It is my happy place.

Winter Series I love winter, sunlight glinting on the snow, the crunching sound of boots in the crisp cold, the laughter of children playing, the ageless joy of making snow sculptures. I did a ton of walking during the pandemic and met my goal of 11,113 steps a day for the whole year, without missing a day. I purged my fears and worries on these walks and painted instead the wonder that every snowflake and every weighted branch held.

Faces Series – Although this series started before Covid struck, I created many more faces during the pandemic. These images came from my background as an aesthetician and make-up artist. I see the details and features that make each one fascinating and unique. Using vibrant colours, I infuse my own mood and emotions into the canvas.

Splash Series – I couldn’t go away on a holiday to Mexico. This series represents my love of the ocean and longing to be near the water. It’s about the restless energy, deep calm, and timeless allure that water holds. I missed my morning walks along the shore and still was energized and calmed by the very thought of it.

Elizabeth is a member of the Sculptors Society of Canada and the Society of Canadian Artists.

Elizabeth has been exhibiting internationally for over 35 years. She was most recently represented by Galerie Lamoureux Ritzenhoff.
